Your small outdoor space might be lacking in square feet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it look grand. With the right touch—particularly, the right outdoor rug— you can easily turn your small outdoor space into a relaxing haven perfect for taking in the fresh air and soaking up the sun.
Whether you’ve got a small balcony, porch, or patio, a beautiful outdoor rug is the perfect way to add style and cushion without requiring a lot of room. If you need some style inspiration and rug ideas, check out how our favorite stylists decorated their small outdoor spaces with our washable rugs.
1. Double It Up: Linea Plaid Doormat and Outdoor Sailmaker Stripe Black Rug
Get twice the style without needing twice the space by layering your outdoor rugs. A doormat over a small outdoor rug looks great at the entrance of your home. Dress up the rest of your front porch with a small bench, pillows, and lots of plants that look great without taking up much room.
2. Go for Bright: Outdoor Ombra Teal Rug
When you don’t have a large outdoor space to decorate, make a statement with a colorful rug. The balcony seen here might be small, but it has big style thanks to the bold outdoor rug in shades of teal and blue, a fun accent pillow, and lots of plants.
3. Amp Up the Greenery: Outdoor Filifera Palm Green Rug
Turn your small outdoor space into a tropical oasis with a statement-making rug in a palm-leaf print. With a rug this bold, keep the rest of the decor simple. A neutral-colored table and chairs plus a few hanging plants will do the trick.
4. Keep It Classy: Outdoor Cleo Trellis Natural Rug
A trellis rug in a soft tan color looks great in a small outdoor space because the pattern is classic and simple, adding a touch of elegance. Keep the rest of the decor in the same color family for a monochrome look that’ll make the space look bigger.
5. Add a Touch of Boho: Outdoor Nomada White Rug
Boho decor works great in small outdoor spaces because of its cozy, relaxing vibe. Opt for an outdoor rug in a black and white design to add visual interest to the area. Pair it with rattan furniture and lots of pillows and plants to create the perfect spot for curling up outside and enjoying nature.
6. Keep It Simple: Outdoor Offset Stripe Black Rug
Sometimes the best way to make the most of your small outdoor space is to keep your decor simple and functional. A modern rug in a striped pattern, like the one seen here, adds just enough style to the balcony without overwhelming the space. Add a small table and some colorful chairs and you’ve got yourself the perfect little spot for dining al fresco.

Hi,
I’m about to order my first ruggable. How do you get the rug cover back on the pad after washing it?
Thanks!
Colleen
Hi there, Collen! After washing your Rug Cover and/or Rug Pad, you are able to re-assemble it similar to how you first laid it out (side note: please be sure both the Cover and Pad are fully dry prior to assembly after washing!).
We have included a link to our assembly instructions which includes a tutorial as well: https://myruggable.com/assembly-guide
We hope this helps! Please also feel free to reach out to us at support@ruggable.com if you have any further questions.😊
do you have any outdoor rugs with an animal motif such as zebra ?
Hi, Mary! At this time, we unfortunately do not have any Outdoor Rugs matching that description. We do offer rugs that feature animal prints/designs (such as our Zebra Rugs, which come in multiple different colors/palettes), but they are all meant for indoor use only and none of them are compatible with outdoor spaces.
With that said, we are happy to note your interest in seeing these designs added to our Outdoor Collection!✍
I have a new small deck with steps at my backdoor that my dogs use daily. I painted the deck. What rug would be safe to use outdoors that won’t trap water underneath and mess up the paint? (I have multiple indoor ruggables and LOVE them!)
Hi, Kathy! Any of our Outdoor Rugs would work well for your outdoor space! In regards to rain/water, we just suggest storing your rug during winter and/or heavy rain seasons. If you experience heavier rains than expected then seperating the Rug Cover from the Rug Pad can help with speeding up the drying process!
Another great tip is to periodically clean underneath your Rug Pad itself to help ensure things like debris, moisture, etc. don’t get built up overtime.
Can outdoor rugs be washed by hosing them down? We are thinking to put a runner next to our spa.
Hi, Meg! To wash our Outdoor Rugs, we suggest the following:
1. Sweep or blow away any debris that may have accumulated on the rug, such as leaves or dust. Do not use sharp instruments (like a metal rake) that may damage the woven fibers.
2. Remove the Rug Cover from the Rug Pad and put it in the washer with the design side facing out.
3. Machine-wash the Rug Cover in cold water on a delicate cycle using a mild, non-bleach detergent.
4. Hang-dry or tumble-dry on low.
For in between washes you can also sweep it clean with a broom as well as spot clean minor spills/stains by using a mixture of dish soap and water and a rag/towel!
Rinsing it off with a hose may not properly clean the Rug and it can take longer to dry. If you choose to rinse off your rug by using a hose, we do suggest removing the Rug Cover from the Rug Pad so that you can hang your Cover up to dry. This will allow your Rug to dry quicker and prevent it from sitting wet for prolonged periods of time.
We hope this information is helpful!
I have an outdoor ruggable. We plan to put a propane fire pit on the ruggable, will that be okay?
Hey there, Kelli! We are happy to offer further insight into our rugs and how they would perform in this sort of space/setup.😊
Our rug cover consists of 3 layers: the top surface is 100% woven polyester chenille, the internal waterproof barrier is 100% polyurethane, and the bottom is 100% polyester knit.
Polyester is a synthetic fabric with a natural tight weave which is naturally flame resistant due to the structure of the fabric and how it’s woven. Polyurethane is a commonly associated with the production of Spandex, surface sealants etc. It is a polymer that joins organic and natural compounds bicarbonate (or urethane) links. However, any coals, hot ashes or embers, can cause burn damage to the Rug Cover that is not covered by our warranty.
While our rugs are naturally flame resistant, as mentioned above, sparks, ashes, and other such debris that may come out of a fire pit may cause damage still. If you choose to use one of our rugs under your fire pit, please feel free to do so at your own discretion! Screens and/or mats meant for fire pits may also be helpful in preventing possible damage.
We hope this provides further insight and helps offer further guidance on the matter!
After reading all the comments, I’m thinking you need a rug pad under the outside rug!
Hi, Sarah! Yes, that is correct. We recommend all of our rugs be used with a Rug Pad as the two pieces (Cover + Pad) are meant to be used in conjunction with one another. For our Outdoor Rugs in particular, they should be used with our Classic Rug Pad!
