It always happens like this: You spend days, weeks, probably even months searching for the best rug for your living room, kitchen, or bedroom. You finally find the right size, color, and pattern you and your partner can agree on. You place the rug neatly on your floor and start buying furniture and decor pieces that match it. Everything is finally perfect, and then—splat!—your cute little two-year-old decides it looks way nicer with spaghetti sauce on it. Fun times, right?
Well, fret no more. Thanks to washable rugs, you can elevate the look and feel of your space—without the hassles of strenuous scrubbing, expensive professional cleaning, and adding more rugs in landfills. Usually made of durable and lightweight materials, washable area rugs and runners are basically rugs you can just wash in your home washing machine—no special tools or professional skills necessary.
Some people might call washable rugs nice-to-haves, but for most of us, they’re lifesavers! If you’re still debating whether you need them or not, here are just a few reasons washable rugs are good investments for your home. Plus, keep scrolling to see the best washable rugs on Ruggable according to our customers.
Why You Need a Washable Rug
1. Washable rugs are kid-friendly.

We’ve heard people say they’ve long given up on buying rugs for their homes after they’ve had kids. Others just create no-kids-allowed zones in their houses. We at Ruggable believe you don’t need to sacrifice style for practicality. That’s why we made our rugs stain-resistant, water-resistant, and of course, machine-washable—ideal for kid-friendly areas of your homes where spills, stains, and accidents are inevitable.
2. Washable rugs are pet-friendly.

If you have furry friends at home, then you’re familiar with that distinct pet odor that tends to linger in your rug. Pets are also notorious for leaving their marks everywhere—from muddy paws to pet accidents—which can stain your rug.
While this is normal, this shouldn’t stop you from having rugs in your home. That’s the beauty of having a pet-friendly rug that’s washable and resistant to stains. What’s more, our Rug Covers have a water-resistant barrier that prevents liquid from seeping through, protecting your floors.
3. Washable rugs are better for people with allergies.

Let’s face it: carpets and high-pile rugs are hotbeds for allergens. They collect dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, microscopic insect parts, and who knows what else. Some people are more tolerant to these environmental irritants, but if you’re allergic or sensitive to these substances, you’re probably better off with a lower-pile rug that you can also wash as often as needed.
4. Washable rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas that easily get dirty.

Whether it’s the entryway, mudroom, kitchen, or living room that opens out to the patio or backyard, we all have those high-traffic spaces that tend to get dirty faster than others. For these spaces, you’d need washable rugs, which are more resilient to muddy shoes and paws. Of course, you can always ask people to take their shoes off before coming in, but just in case they don’t, at least you have a backup plan.
5. Washable rugs are ideal for home decor styles that require white or light-colored decor elements.

Modern farmhouse, California coastal chic, modern desert, Scandi—some of today’s hottest home decor styles feature an all-white motif. But as bright and gorgeous as they look, lighter-colored rugs, like white, cream, ivory, or beige rugs, are harder to maintain and keep clean. A washable rug will at least let you enjoy these styles more conveniently.
6. Washable rugs are less expensive in the long run.

Most experts recommend getting your rugs or carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. According to Fixr.com, most professional rug cleaning companies charge $2 to $5 per square foot, which means a standard 8’x10′ rug would cost $160 to $400 to clean. That’s up to $4,000 in 10 years. And this is if you can stand not washing your rug for an entire year!
Renting the rug cleaner from stores would be cheaper, costing you about $30 to $60 a day. Still, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just stick your rug into your washer and dryer and call it a day?
7. Washable rugs are easier on the planet.

Aside from the additional savings you get from not having to buy rugs frequently, having a washable rug that you can use and re-use for a long time is just better for the planet. Those stained rugs we once threw away are still taking up space in landfills because they don’t biodegrade easily.

So, I’ve purchased three and love them, and I may purchase a 4th. A friend asked about the padding for support in the kitchen where this a lot of standing. Wondering if one day you might consider the OPTION of a thicker pad for such places. Just a suggestion.
Hi Barbara Morrow!
Wow, thank you for your support if our washable rugs:) Yes, we have considered thicker padding, however, we are not in development for that at this time. We will keep you posted!
I bought two 8×10 ruggable rugs. I intended to interchange them but changed my mind. I now need to purchase another rug pad. How?
Hey Ann! Yes, you can definitely purchase a rug pad separately by following the link here: https://myruggable.com/rugpad
Please feel free to reach out to customer service at customerserice@ruggable.com for any questions. We’re here to help 🙂
I need a 5 ft square rug for my camper. I wish yall had one.
While we do not offer square rugs at this time we would be happy to pass the suggestion along, Tracy! Stay tuned for future product updates to come.😊
I was wondering what the best way to store your extra covers is. I have a new 8×10 rug cover coming to brighten my room up for summer. Should I fold or roll the original cover? I want it to look fresh when I take it back out come fall/winter..
Hi Debbie! We love that you already have your next Ruggable lined up and ready to refresh the look of your space this summer. The best practice for storing rug covers would be to fold them loosely to avoid hard creases.
Love my new ruggable. If just a small spot gets on the rug, instead of machine washing, can I just dab it up with some water?
Hi Alice. Absolutely! Our rugs can be spot cleaned by placing a cloth or towel over the spill to soak up the liquid, then wiping the surface with warm soapy water.
I’m ready to order a couple of rugs. Being able to wash one in a regular washing is perfect for me
Hi, Ellen. We’re ready when you are! 🙂 We think you’ll enjoy the interchangeability aspect of our rug system. This feature comes in handy for those seasonal changes.

Got my new rug in today. I already love this rug. With two dogs, this will be so much easier to clean and control allergen exposure!
Hi, Dawn! We’re so happy to hear that you are enjoying your Ruggable. -We hear you, a washable rug makes it easy to have a rug in a home with pups.
There is an important eighth reason: Safety. These rugs are secure; they do not slip; and they can go where other rugs cannot, like a bathroom. That was my introduction to Ruggable. I had seen them advertised on Facebook, and when I slipped on a miniscule amount of water in my bathroom and bashed my head on a corner, I ordered three as soon as I got out of the hospital. I now have them in the kitchen and by the front door. I love the selection, and can hardly wait to buy more to rotate some looks.
Thank you for sharing, Sharon. You make a good point! Our rugs are made to grip. -We’re happy to hear that you are doing well after such a fall. If you need anything at all, we’re always here at support@ruggable.com.
I have two little pups that get so excited sometimes that they pee. Nothing has worked to clean the smell out of my previous rugs, no matter how many “guaranteed” products that I’ve tried, I’ve had to throw every rug away. Please explain how your rugs are different and if 100% of the stain and smell is eliminated. Thank you!
I would be interested in a reply to this question too.
Hey, Patrice! We would be happy to tell you a bit more about our product as well as ways to address pet accidents.
Our woven covers are 100% polyester (the top of the cover is made of woven polyester chenille style yarn and the bottom is a polyester knit). The two layers of fabric are bonded together and made of 100% polyester. This makes it possible to recycle the cover because it is all made of the same synthetic material. Another interesting note about polyester is that the fiber does not absorb liquid. Yes, liquid will be absorbed in between the fibers but not within the fiber. This is why stains and odors wash out so easily!
Our Rug Cover is also made with an interior water-resistant barrier, which keeps liquid from seeping through and dripping onto the Rug Pad and your floor.
In regards to pet accidents, for best results we recommend washing the rug immediately after an accident. We received feedback that if not treated right away, the odor from pet urine can still linger even after a wash. Customers have found success removing the smell with a vinegar wash. You may also go to your local pet store for cleaners that might help remove the odor but please make sure they do not contain bleach or chlorine!
If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us at support@ruggable.com.😊
Hi, can i use ruggable on carpet?
I’m interested in this question too
Can I do without the pad in the areas I plan to put ruggable over existing carpet?
Great question! Our Ruggable two-piece Rug System works best on hard surfaces. While many customers successfully use Ruggable Rug Systems on carpeted floors, carpeting reduces the effectiveness of its grip.
Customers who have placed their Rug System on carpeted floors have seen the best results when the rug is anchored with a sofa or heavy table.
Additionally, we do not recommend using the Rug Cover without a Rug Pad as they were intended to used together and not doing so can lead to issues with the grip and/or bunching!
Can you put Ruggable rugs and the pad that comes with them on porcelain floors ? Will it eventually show the Mark’s where the grout is?
Hi, Sarah! We’ve heard good reviews from customers who have chosen to use their Ruggable on porcelain flooring. However, we always recommend double-checking with your flooring manufacturer to be extra cautious.
I’m really interested in getting a ruggable rug for a high traffic area! It’s going on a weird colored tile floor though, and I’m wondering if the rugs I like will look good with it. Do you offer swatches?
Thanks for reaching out, Elsa! Please email our care team at support@ruggable.com for samples and a member from our team would be happy to help.
Can I use your rugs on carpet? And if so, is the pad required?
Hi there, Pat!
Additionally, we do not recommend using the Rug Cover without a Rug Pad as they were intended to used together and not doing so can lead to issues with gripping the floor properly and/or bunching!
Hey There! I plan to buy a ruggable for an entryway exterior door; this door is not the main traffic door but it still is a conduit for rainboots, snow boots, muddy shoes, etc.
Can ruggable be used for as soon as you enter a house, or are they recommended as decorative rugs?
Great question, Maria! And thank you for your interest in Ruggable. 😊
Ruggable rugs can be great in an entryway/mud room. However, the rugs are not designed to withstand large amounts of water, mud, salt and snow. In moderate conditions, our low-pile design makes it easy to clean the rug cover in a washing machine!
If you plan to use a Ruggable rug in the entryway, we recommend sticking to some of our darker designs.
I am in Ontario, Canada. Has there been any delays in orders to Canada in your experience?
Thank you! 🙂
Hi, Dana! In an effort to maintain production and personnel safety, typical shipping times have been extended. You can expect to receive your order between 2-4 weeks.
We thank you for your patience and understanding. 🙂
I would like to put this rug in the 4-season porch. Will this work for a heated floor?
Hi, Jan! Our 2-piece rug system is safe for hard surface or vinyl flooring. Our TPR backed rug pad has passed all flooring tests and does not leave stains!
However, we have not tested our rug system on radiant in-floor heating. We always recommend double checking with your flooring manufacturer to be extra cautious. Additionally, you may want to check out our customer reviews regarding using our rug system on various types of flooring.
Can I dry the rug in the dryer machine?
Hi, Lucero! That’s a great question and the answer is yes, you can dry your Rug Cover in the dryer. After you have washed your Rug Cover, you can then dry it in the dryer on low heat. Please be sure to avoid high heat. The Rug Cover can also be hung and air-dried if necessary!😄✨
do all carpet orders come with the pad? the one you choose?
It does not show up when I click for the pad with the rug.
Hello! Yes, the Rug Pad is included when purchasing a Ruggable Rug System – it automatically comes with the Classic Rug Pad. You can choose your Rug Pad type (Classic or Cushioned) or you can also opt out of receiving a Rug Pad if you already have one by clicking the Rug Pad selection drop down on a product page. This drop down is located right below where you select the size of your Rug!
Hello— can you help me identify a green chevron style tile that you are using in a photo in a laundry room w/ washer and dryer and deep white farm sink? The ruggable pictured is a smaller grey style. Thank you in advance !
Hey, Audrey! Unfortunately, we don’t have information on the other décor or furniture shown! Many of our photos and videos are shared with us from our customers.
I have a ruggable that I love from a few years ago. The only thing I don’t like is that the edges curl up. Any tips? Have the rugs changed in design at all in the last 2 years to make this issue less of a problem? Do the new fluffy rugs do this less?
Hi, Leah! Thanks for reaching out!
Since you last purchased one of our rugs, we’ve made several improvements including adding a new layer of 100% silicone to the corners for our rugs to help create stability and keep the Rug Cover structured to the Rug Pad.
If you haven’t already done so, feel free to email our Customer Care team at support@ruggable.com for assistance with this concern. 😊
I am thinking about buying a few of your rugs, and I have verified that my washer is plenty big, but I can’t find any mention about drying them. Can they go in the dryer?
Hi, Frank! We are happy to hear that you are interested in Ruggable. To answer your question, yes you can put your Rug Cover in the dryer.
Once you have washed your Rug Cover, you can then dry them in the dryer on low heat. Avoid high heat. The Rug Cover can also be hung and air-dried if necessary!😊
What country are they made in
Great question, Don! Our rugs are made in and ship from the US.😊
Several people have asked and I see answer. Can Ruggables be used on top of carpeting? With or without pad? I would like to use in our motorhome.
Hi, Debbie! We typically do not recommend using a Ruggable Rug System over the carpet. Our Rugs are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with our non-slip Rug Pad that grips on hard surfaces. Placing Ruggable Rug Systems directly over the carpet may cause a tripping hazard and also carpeting reduces the effectiveness of its grip.
However, customers who have placed their Rug System on carpeted floors have seen the best results when the rug is anchored with a sofa or heavy table and away from heavy traffic areas. Please also note that we do not recommend using only the Rug Cover on top of carpeted floors!
I have a dog that occasionally has accidents in the house. I like the concept of being able to wash the rug, but can you answer how to get urine out of the pad if it goes through?
Of course, Kerry! We would be more than happy to offer assistance. (:
To thoroughly clean the Rug Pad, remove all solids from the surface and saturate the Rug Pad in warm soapy water. Then, rinse with clean water, and hang to dry. You can use any household disinfectant that does not contain bleach. Please avoid washing in a washing machine as that could tear the rug pad.
For best results, we recommend washing the rug immediately after an accident. We received feedback that if not treated right away, the odor from pet urine can still linger even after a wash. Customers have found success removing the smell with a vinegar wash. You may also go to your local pet store for cleaners that might help remove the odor but please make sure they do not contain bleach or chlorine.
Can your largest size rug 9 X 12 fit into a new top loading washing machine w/o an agitator?
I have dog thats occasionally have accidents in the house. I like the concept of being able to wash the rug, but can you answer how to get urine out of the pad if it goes through?
Great question, Thomas! The Rug Cover, once removed from the underlying Rug Pad, can fit comfortably in a standard or large capacity top or front load washer (with or without an agitator). For the 9’x12′ size in particular, a 4.2+cubic ft. size washer is required (this includes and agitator, without an agitator a 3.8+ cu. ft. size will accommodate as well!).
To make sure your washer is compatible with various sizes/styles, please feel free to visit the following link: https://myruggable.com/washing-machine-guide
As for pet accidents, our Rug Cover is made with an interior water-resistant barrier, which keeps liquid from seeping through and dripping onto the Rug Pad and your floor. Additionally, vinegar washes/spot cleaning are great ways to help remove lingering smells! You can also use store bought products that can help address these issues and while we do not suggest any specific type or brand, please be sure they do not contain bleach or chlorine prior to use.
What is the recommendation on how to wash the rugs. I have purchased a long runner
Hi, Dorothy! For best results, machine-wash your Rug Covers cold using a mild, non-bleach detergent and with the design side facing outwards. Dry it on low heat, or hang and air-dry if needed. Please feel free to reach out if there is anything else we can do to help.
Hi, Thomas! All of our rugs are designed with home washing machines in mind.
The Rug Cover, once removed from the underlying Rug Pad, can fit comfortably in a standard or large capacity top or front load washer (with or without an agitator).
To make sure your washer is compatible with our rugs, please visit the following link: https://myruggable.com/washing-machine-guide
As for the Rug Pad, while the Rug Pad (bottom layer) is not machine-washable itself, it can still be cleaned. For wet messes, spot-clean the area with soap and water using a washcloth or towel, then allow the Pad to dry laying flat. Customers have found success removing the smell with a vinegar wash/rinse. You may also go to your local pet store for cleaners that might help remove the odor but please make sure they do not contain bleach or chlorine. 😊
Are there other designs/colors that are not shown in this ad? Those listed just aren’t my style.
Hi, Lyn! We have hundreds of designs to choose from. You can view our full collection at Ruggable.com! You can further narrow down your search by size, color, style, and/or collection as well!
We hope you find the perfect fit for your home.🥰
Does sunlight fade your rugs?
Hi, Roseann! If your rug is going to be exposed to a lot sunlight, especially direct sunlight, our Outdoor Rugs would work best. Our Outdoor Rug Cover is built with UV-resistance in mind, but prolonged exposure to the sun will cause fading over time.
To minimize fading, keep it in a screened or covered area, clean it on a regular basis, and bring it indoors for the winter season. Non-Outdoor Rugs may not hold up as well as they are not made with UV-resistance in mind and can fade faster if put in the same conditions as Outdoor Rugs.
We hope this helps!
How does a room size rug fit in the washer?
Hi, Vonda! All of our rugs are designed with home washing machines in mind.
The Rug Cover, once removed from the underlying Rug Pad, can fit comfortably in a standard or large capacity top or front load washer (with or without an agitator).
To make sure your washer is compatible with our rugs, please visit the following link: https://myruggable.com/washing-machine-guide 😊
I have a truly disreputable wall to wall carpet in my den. I can’t pull it up but was wondering if I could put an 8×10 on top of the worse worn area or will it “walk” all the time? What do you suggest?
Hi there, Suzanne.
With that said, we do not recommend using only the Rug Cover on top of carpeted floors. Be sure you are always using a Rug Cover and Rug Pad in conjunction with one another!
We hope this information is helpful in deciding if Ruggable would be a good fit for your home.😊
