Kitchens get a workout—a rug in the kitchen will, too! When shopping for a kitchen rug, the most important factors to consider are comfort and cleanability. You’ll want a rug that cushions your feet and is easy to move around on while performing tasks. You’ll also want a rug that is durable, washable, and easy to clean. Because your kitchen rug requires regular cleaning, you’ll want a rug that’s easy to pull up and put back into place.
Where to Place Your Kitchen Rug
Regardless of the size and shape of your kitchen, the space in front of the kitchen sink is the best, most functional place for your kitchen rug. It’s where we stand for longer periods of time so the extra cushion there really helps.
The kitchen sink is typically centered on a wall with cabinetry adjacent, so coordinate your rug with both your flooring and cabinetry, and place the rug centered in front of the sink.
Rug Size for a Large Kitchen
(Over 200 square feet)
Who doesn’t love a large kitchen? A space this big can most likely handle larger or even multiple rugs.
If you have a kitchen island and want a rug there, position a 5’x7′, ‘3×5’, or runner rugs on either or both sides of the island. If you prefer to have more visible floor space, a long kitchen runner, like a 2.5’x10’, spanning the length of the cabinets or the sink is also a good alternative.
Rug Styling Tips for Large Kitchens:
– Leave the area around the refrigerator and stove clear from the rug.
– Position the rug underneath the island seating, but not underneath the island itself. You’d want to be able to easily pull the rug up for regular cleaning.
Rug Size for a Medium-Size Kitchen
(100 to 200 square feet)
Rug Styling Tip for Medium-Size Kitchens:
– Remember that the smaller the kitchen the more wear your rug gets.
– Place your rug strategically, close to the sink or stove. You should be able to work efficiently without a rug getting in the way.
Rug Size for a Small Kitchen
(70 square feet or less)
A small kitchen can very easily feel cluttered, adding a rug and pattern may only add to that. However, the right kind of rug can add warmth and personality to an otherwise utilitarian space. If you do decide on adding a rug, opt for a small 2’x3’ or 3’x5′ rug or a short kitchen runner, like a 2.5’x7’, and place it in front of the sink.
Rug Styling Tips for Small Kitchens:
For small kitchens, select a rug color that coordinates with your floor, keeping pattern light and minimal.
Rug Size for Long or Galley-Style Kitchens
(at least 10 feet long)
A galley-style kitchen consists of two parallel units, usually the stove and fridge on one side and the sink on the other, forming a long central corridor. Most small kitchens, especially in apartment homes, have this kind of layout. For this layout, a runner rug, either a 2.5’x7’ or a 2.5’x10’, would look the best.
Rug Styling Tips for Galley-Style Kitchens:
If the galley is wide, position the runner rug along the sink side of the kitchen. If the space is narrow, position it in the center of the kitchen.

Can you put the rug on top of carpet in bedroom?
Good question, Kay! We don’t suggest placing our rugs over carpet. Our Rug Covers are designed to adhere to our nonslip Rug Pads, and the overall Rug System works best on hard surface floors.
I cant find the styles in the round sizes….
Hi there, Lynda!
You can shop our Round Rugs here on our website: https://myruggable.com/roundsecondround
Our Round Rugs come in 6′ and 8′ sizes!😊
Hi! My kitchen is around the medium size kitchen size but it has the sink in the corner with the stove/oven to the right of it. How would you suggest placing a rug? I love having a rug under me when I wash dishes but the corner makes it hard for rugs.
Thanks for this guide on how to pick a rug for a kitchen. My brother likes cooking at home and my mom is looking for an appropriate gift for his birthday. The idea of buying a rug that can fit our kitchen is brilliant! We’ll make sure to pick the appropriate color and size of the rug for him!
Hi there! My sink is in the corner of Mt kitchen between the dishwasher and the oven, what do you recommend?
I would love to see these rugs in small sizes for the kitchen. This is a really fantastic idea. The sizes provided I cannot use.
100% agree. I want a smaller one 2/3 x 4 to put in front of my sink to match the two runners I purchased that lay nicely on each side of my island.
Hi, Pamela and Mary Ann! We appreciate your interest in Ruggable and have passed back your feedback to our team concerning both of your interests in smaller sizes.😊
I love ruggables and would love them for my kitchen however the sizes are too large. Will you be offering smaller sizes anytime soon or custom sizes? 2×3 or
2×6?
Yes I agree. I would love a size to fit just inside of my back door. 33”x24”
I have all matching Ruggable runners for my kitchen and hall ways and full size rugs (living & dining room). Would love the smaller sizes to match.
Thank you for providing your feedback, Becca and Bev! We have passed along your feedback and interest in smaller/additional sizes to our team.😄
100% agree. I want a smaller one 2/3 x 4 to put in front of my sink to match the two runners I purchased that lay nicely on each side of my island.
My galley kitchen is longer than 10′. Are there longer runners available?
Thanks
Hi, Camille! Thanks for reaching out! Although we currently don’t have a runner longer than 10′, we never say never! We’ll make sure to share your interest with our team. 🙂
I have a small foyer that has a door and 2 sets of stairs. I would love to see smaller size Ruggables (2/3 x 4) to fit in a smaller space that has weird angles that will not accommodate a 3 x 5 rug.
Thanks for all the tips! I have a style question. I have a 6’9” long island with the sink centered in it. My stove and back cabinets span the entire length of the kitchen just behind the island. Should I choose a runner that is 6 feet long so it is not noticeable from the open concept livingroom or is it acceptable to have a longer runner like 8 feet long and have a few inches visible on with side of the island? Thanks for your recommendation.
Without seeing the space, I’d suggest going with the 6’ rug to fit neatly into the space between the island and stove + cabinetry, I think this will be a cleaner look from all angles.
I have a round kitchen table in my farmhouse style kitchen. How should a round rug fit with the table and 4 chairs. I am afraid the 6 foot round will be to small and the 8 foot will be to big. Any help is appreciated
Hi Kathy. Ideally, you’ll want 30-36″ of chair space between the table and the edge of the rug so chairs can slide in and out and stay on the carpet. Measure your table’s diameter and add 5-6′ to see what fits best.
Hi, I have a nice size kitchen 400 square feet with a sitting area. Can I mix prints in the same color or get 3 of the same rugs?
Hey Wendy. You can mix prints in the same color. You can also simplify the space a bit keeping two of the rugs the same and making the one rug by the seating area more special, similar colors but in a more sophisticated pattern.
I really like the colors of the Outdoor Chunky Solid Multicolor Rug for our spa … do you sell it by the roll? If not
perhaps you can direct me to the source / manufacturer
I need special sizes with edges bound:
2_ 22″w x 40′ long runners
2_22″w x13′ long runners
1_22″w x 26′ long runner
1_22″w x 10′ long runner
Hi, Sandra! Unfortunately, at this time we do not offer custom sizing. Our Rugs are all made to order by our team and we unfortunately do not sell by the roll or anything of that nature. We do apologize for any inconveniences this may cause and we will pass along your feedback concerning the additional sizes you are looking for!😊
Why don’t you suggest putting a rug in front of the stove? I was thinking of buying one for next to the island and another for in front of the stove. Thanks.
Hey Jill. A rug at the stove is purely a personal choice. Depending on your layout, especially with the kitchen island, another rug by the stove might be perfect!
Hi! I have a similar space to the above where the Hendesi rug is, but it is an island with sink across from cabinets and range and may be a little wider walkway (48 inches of floor but really about 44″ from end of oven to where cabinets come out from island). I like the look you show here but my concern is that you’d be standing half on and half off that rug at oven or sink. Not sure it would look right closer to sink and not in middle? I’d love your suggestion. Thank you!
Hi Lindsay. The visuals are always better when the rug is centered on any space but that isn’t always ideal for the way we move around in our homes. I personally would prefer to be all on or all off of the rug and because I cook all the time and my kitchen is in constant use, the in-between would bug me. Scoot the rug closer to the sink where it makes most sense and where you’re comfortable working from.
Hi! I have so many questions about rugs that seem really minor but I just don’t know how to go about it for my kitchen! I have a L shaped kitchen so I could do the runner in between the island and sink but I guess I’m just so used to function and I don’t understand not standing on the rug in front of the sink? (because in all the pictures anywhere online the runner is centered between the island and sink area)— I probably am over thinking this but I guess I’m so used to standing on a rug in front of my sink and oven. Also, should I not have a rug in front of my oven? lol I feel so lost and I’m only 33 years old! haha
Hi Jessica. If the sink is centered on that side of the kitchen you”ll have that centerline to provide balance. A rug at the stove is purely a personal choice. Depending on your layout, and your preference, another rug by the stove could very well work! Again, if the stove is centered on the wall, bonus!
Get tips! I really wish Ruggable offered a 4×6 option.
Thank you for your feedback, Lizzie! It’s been noted 🤗
If you have a small galley kitchen and put a runner in it, then when you stand in front of the sink washing dishes, you are not able to have support under your feet. How to you manage the need to have something right under your feet for dishwashing or stovetop cooking with the aesthetic of needing to center a rug in the long galley?
Hi Kimberly!
There’s no simple answer to this one without seeing your set-up. Would a wider rug do the trick? A natural rug like jute that fits the galley space then layering a Ruggable at the sink end might give you the bit of the balance you want visually and the comfort you want underfoot.
I have a galley style kitchen with white quartz countertops with grey veining. White upper cabinets and medium gray lowers. I want to order 2.5 x 7 ft rug that would end just before the fridge. Which rug would look better? Hudson grey stripe rug (I am not crazy about the tan in the rug) or Inik Ikat grey rug? Thanks.
Hey Pamela,
It sounds like the tan doesn’t strike the right chord with you now, and it most likely won’t when it’s in your kitchen. There’s a bit of green in the Hudson that takes it another direction. The Inik has some soft pink tones that warm things up. How about the Anza Warm Grey? The pattern is lovely too.
I am concerned about placing this non slip base on a real hardwood floor. Is it safe? I have read that this kind of backing can mar the floor’s finish.
Hey, Valerie! We completely understand your concerns! Our 2-piece rug system is safe for hard surface or vinyl flooring. Our TPR backed rug pad has passed all flooring tests and does not leave stains!
However, we always recommend double checking with your flooring manufacturer to be extra cautious! Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team at support@ruggable.com for any additional questions.
Hi! I’m looking for a rug to place between my island and wall countertop. The sink is on the island and the stove is right behind it against the wall. I was thinking of a long runner, but my dimensions don’t work. The island is 9.5′ long and the space between the island and counter is 3.5′. Wondering if the 7′ runner is too small for the space and I’d be better off going with an area rug. My goal is to protect the hardwood floor.
Hey Allyson,
The 7′ runner should work in your kitchen. The runner should float in the space.
I love your rugs! However, I am like other readers. I would like two 30×45” rugs for my sink and stovetop to match or coordinate with a larger rug. Those are the ones that need to be washed the most often.
Thank You,
Thank you for your feedback, Leslie!
Unfortunately, we do not offer that specific size at this time, however, we did recently release our 2’x3′ Rugs which may work well for the spaces you are wanting to put them! If you are interested, please feel free to use the following link to view our 2’x3′ Rug collection: https://myruggable.com/2×3
My kitchen has an open area of about 6 x 7 1/2; the layout is similar to the first picture under medium sized kitchens. What size would you recommend?
Loved involving information about kitchen rugs.
🥰🙌
can these rugs be used on vinyl floors
Hey there! Our 2-piece rug system is safe for hard surface or vinyl flooring. Our TPR backed rug pad has passed all flooring tests and does not leave stains. We’ve also heard good reviews from customers who have chosen to use their Ruggable rug on vinyl flooring!
However, we always recommend double checking with your flooring manufacturer to be extra cautious.
Hi – we want to put a rug on the floor space created by our U-shaped island. The space is approx 5.5 by 9 feet. I feel like a 3×5 Ruggable will look lost – but will the 5×7 look too big and overpower the space ? Thanks!
I very much like to have 3 by 12 runners, my kitchen is huge and 2.5 by 10 is too small. Is there a plan for this size in the near future?
Hey there, Riham! We do not have any new sizes planned at this time but we will note your interest in seeing this size and larger runner sizes available! ✍ We appreciate this feedback.😊
I currently have a 3’x10′ runner in my kitchen between the island (with sink) and the stove. I really really really want to switch to a ruggable here so I can keep it cleaner but your 2.5′ wide runners are just too narrow for the space. Any chance you’ll start offering 3′ wide runners soon?
We don’t have any new sizes planned at this time, Michael. We would be happy to share your interest in seeing additional sizes available in our Runners but at this current time the closest options we have are our 2.5’x10′ Runner size or you could also do two of our 3’x5′ rugs to help fill the area you are referencing!
Hello, first of all I have had a couple ruggables and love them…I’ll never buy another brand! I am ready to replace my kitchen ruggable, currently I have a 3 x 5 sized rug which I have in front of the sink. I am thinking about a larger 5 x 7 rug or the 7’ runner. Our kitchen is 14 x 12 and we have a peninsula island. What size would you recommend?
We recently moved to a new house with all hardwood and I’ve therefore had to learn about area rugs, since I’m otherwise clueless.
Regarding the medium kitchen 5×7 you have shown above, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a rug at all since the high traffic areas in front of the stove, the sink, and the fridge are all left bare?
With the runners, you have them pushed right up to the counter so you’d be standing on the rug while working in those areas.
Hey, Tyler! It’s largely dependent on our layout and the functionality of your kitchen. You are able to use different configurations than those shown to help best accommodate your space and how you work in it! Some may prefer multiple smaller rugs, one larger rug, and other such layouts. The above are just suggestions to help provide inspiration!
I have been admiring your rugs on line for a long time, They are all so beautiful. I am struggling to pick the right one for my home. Can I send a picture of my flooring and would you be willing to send some suggests that you think would work well?

I have a rectangular kitchen diner. On the left hand side I have a run of units with a small return. On the right hand side I have a small 2 person table against the wall. The room has doors at either end, meaning the main part of the kitchen is a through passage. Hence why the table and units are against opposite walls. My main reason for getting a carpet is to create more warmth visually and practically. I have to pass through the kitchen to get to the bathroom so I wanted softness underfoot. It made most sense to consider a rug that fills the open space, but the more I read about rug positioning the advice seems to point to the idea it should be placed strategically. For instance, to frame a seating area, or by the kitchen (like a runner).
Do you think I should get a rug that goes under the table and chairs or just fills the empty space in the middle?
Thanks
I just moved into a condo with a medium size square kitchen and a very dark floor. I’d like to brighten the space. I also would like rug protection at the sink but also in front of the fridge on the opposite side of the kitchen. I think more than 1 rug would look weird. I was thinking of 1 large rug but I’d want it to catch the sink area water splats and drips as well as the fridge water dispenser dribbles. Can I get away with a large almost wall to wall rug? Or would this look weird. Also any tips on what color to choose for a very dark floor. I’d really like to brighten the room with a bright light color but concerned about potential spots and stains. I’d love your thoughts.
Hallo, ek wou jou prys ken.

My kitchen island is 8 feet 8 inches long. Do you recommend the 7 or 10 foot runner?
Hi, Monique! The size choice ultimately depends on your overall kitchen layout and how you want it to look. If you only want the rug to coincide with your island then the 7′ may be best as it won’t overlap it (it is also ideal if you have over counters or furniture that the longer rug may run into!).
If you have a long enough walk way int he kitchen to accomodate the 10′ and want it to tie into the overall space and not just align with the island, than the 10′ may be more ideal. You will have an overlap of just over half a foot on each side with the 10′ runner, so just keep that in mind when planning your space out.😊
I have a 7ft x 8ft kitchen with a corner sink. I am wondering your advice with a rug placement and size in a kitchen with a corner sink?
Hi, Kristen! Size selection is dependent not only on your space but also your preference in layout. For example, depending on the exact layout and measurements regarding your sink, a smaller size such as our 2’x3′ or 3’x5′ would be a perfect fit for in front of your sink! If you are wanting a larger area covered, however, use of one of our Runner Rugs alongside your counterspace or a larger area rug, such as a 4’x6′ or even 5’x7′ (though this size may be a tighter fit, depending on exact measurements of your space!), would also work.
In this situation, it depends on it you want a rug covering large amount of space in your kitchen or if you only want a small area such as alongside your counters or in front of the sink covered. We highly recommend checking out our social media pages for some design inspiration as well as our Facebook group, Style and Design by Ruggable, for some more detailed and personalized feedback! The group includes decor enthusiast, both amatuer and expert alike, and is a great resource for anyone looking to get additional ideas, suggestions, and feedback for their space. I have a seven foot island. Should a runner placed by the island be the same lenth or would a 10 foot runner work?
Hi, Alan! Both options are viable and commonly used in kitchen! The main factors to consider are preferences on look as well as the specific layout and parameters of your kitchen. Such as, will the additional length be in the way of any other furniture, rugs, etc.? If your island is isolated and the additional length at the ends does not pose any issues, then the only other thing to consider if your preference on the look!
Do you want your rug to mirror your island and compliment it by being the same length? Or do you want it to parallel your island but tie into the rest of the kitchen as well? In either instance, both 7′ and 10′ are able to work in the space!
I have a small kitchen consisting of fridge on one wall, the stove at right angle and an angled kitchen island containing my sink. How could I make rugs work.
