Ali and her husband, Brett, started their Instagram account, BARCbyBrettandAli, a couple years ago as a way to showcase the different home renovations and DIY projects they’re working on. The account now boasts over 17,000 followers and endless design inspirations. Ali recently took over our Instagram to give a tour of some of her favorite rooms in her Ohio home along with the Ruggable rugs she uses to style them.

Design Style: “As far as our design style goes, I don’t think we really fit into one bucket. We definitely have a mid-century flair, but we also like the simplicity and clean lines of modern design. As you’ll see through our home and some of our favorite spaces, we like to bring in things that either create functionality or that’s something special to us.”
Family Room
“My very favorite room in our house is our family room. I love that it not only aesthetically looks the way that I want but it’s also extremely functional. My husband built the entertainment center. Not only is that extremely special, but it also centers the room, so we absolutely love that element.
Over quarantine, I painted the entire wall black, which was kind of that dramatic add that this room needed. It ties in perfectly with this rug, which we’ve had in here for several years. I just cannot seem to go a different way, it looks too good. It pulls the whole space together.
This space is a favorite of ours and it leads into the staircase, which we did recently as well. We wanted a gallery wall look, something to showcase some of our special photographs and memories. We love that we added this on. The white with that black wall just pops, so this is what I mean about everything in this space that just kind of flows together and why this will probably remain my favorite room.”
Kids’ Play Room
“We have a one-year-old, Mason, so we wanted to create a space that was separate for our son. We custom-built a little house to not only give him a play space but also to block a lot of his toys. We ended up adding a little swing, wallpapered the back wall, and then built these cubby structures at the back. We house all the colorful toys in there so that leaves a lot of space for him to play.
He loves basketball, so we put a real hoop here and a bag with balls. This space is perfect because it’s a little separate zone for him but it also gives him something fun to play with as he gets older.”
Back Porch
“We rebuilt a deck out here and did some concrete countertop. We got Mason a little house and refinished it for his first birthday, and got a completely new dining set out here. It has been such a nice addition especially as we spend a lot more time here as a family.
We also got a gazebo because we get a ton of sun back here. It also adds a bit more privacy since our neighbors are close, as well as some shade. We ended up putting more landscaping back here, creating a space that is extremely comfortable and livable, where we can actually be on really hot days.
Bedroom
“This was kind of our quarantine project. Our master bedroom has never been something that I was really in love with. So I got this inspiration to do a centralized slat wall. My goal with this was to center the bed and elongate it. I wanted something kind of subtle but dramatic. By adding this green color, I think it did just that.
We also wanted to pick up some black accents in here, which we did with the shades that tie into this rug. I also painted the doors black. One of the other things that we added were these sconces on both sides of the bed, and the brass on that green just really could not be more beautiful.
Last year, we decided to focus on building the furniture. Every piece of furniture in here, besides my vanity, was built by Brett. He built these side tables first and then this beautiful armoire as well as the dresser. The vanity was something that was my grandmother’s which I inherited and I painted it the same green as the back wall to tie everything together. We put so much TLC in this room, I could not be more pleased with how it turned out.”
