Jonathan Adler, world-renowned potter, designer extraordinaire, and the creative genius behind his eponymous lifestyle brand, is not one to shy away from bright colors and clashing patterns. A self-proclaimed maximalist, with a tendency to mix and match colors and patterns with abandon, he believes that everything in the home should spark joy and reflect the owner’s personality at their most glamorous and eccentric self.
“A house should be like a portrait of its owner,” Jonathan explains. “I say fill your home with stuff you love, spend more than you think you should, and make things bigger than you think you need.”
But art and glamour need not be fragile. Hence, the Jonathan Adler x Ruggable Rug Collection was born. Designed with dogs, kids, and life in mind, this new rug collection lets you enjoy stylish designer rugs without stressing about sauce spills and pet accidents.
“Ruggable is a brilliant product,” says Jonathan. “It’s like a perfect solution for life as we live it. You can do anything to it, throw it in the washer, and it’s fine. Voila!”
Ready to get to know Ruggable’s newest designer rugs? Here we sat down with Jonathan Adler himself to chat about his new rug collection, as well as tips on how to style these washable works of art.
RUGGABLE: What excites you about this collaboration?
JONATHAN ADLER: Two words: washable rugs. I actually don’t know who’s more excited about the collection, my adorable rescue mutt FoxyLady or me. She’s always adding a little…patina to our rugs. Now with my collection for Ruggable, patina isn’t problematic.
R: Why did you decide to partner with Ruggable?
JA: When Ruggable called, a collective screech of excitement echoed through the office from every employee with pets, kids, and/or a sloppy husband. Our rugs have always been wantable, but thanks to Ruggable they’re now washable!
R: Why are washable rugs so important? How did you clean your rugs before Ruggable?
JA: I’ve spent years trailing FoxyLady with a paper towel in one hand and a spray bottle of cleaner in the other. Now I can just throw the rug in the wash; I have so much more free time now that Ruggable has blasted into my life!
R: How does Ruggable relate to your specific aesthetic? Also, we’ve heard that you think minimalism is boring. Why?
JA: I describe my aesthetic using three words: Modern American Glamour. My collection with Ruggable is no different. I’ve included my favorite colors, patterns, and textures in the collection. Ruggable has disrupted rugs—what’s more modern and glamorous than that?
The truth is that I’m a minimalist product designer—I always design using an economy of gesture—but a maximalist interior designer.
R: This collection is also about inspiring “joy” in the home. Why is that so important now more than ever and how does this partnership help make that possible?
JA: If this past year has taught us anything it’s that our homes should make us happy. Spending so much time at home I think changed people’s perspectives and showed the importance of a well-designed space that is also functional.
R: Who do you think will love these rugs?
JA: Well, hopefully, everyone! But especially anyone with children of either the two- or four-legged varieties.
R: What are three adjectives that describe this collection?
JA: The rugs in the collection are chic, graphique, and an impressive technical feat!
R: Could you give us your top three styling tips for these rugs?
JA: You need a rug in your dining room—just trust me on this one. Throw the Op Art Rug under any dining table for an optically alluding space.
If your pad has warm oak floors opt for the Ink Drop in camel and ivory. That combo just makes my chakras tingle.
Don’t be afraid to make a statement with your rug. Try the Venom Rug in an entryway—boom serpentine showstopper.
R: What are your favorite pieces in the Jonathan Adler x Ruggable collection? Why?
JA: If I had to choose I would have to say the Carnaby Rug in Mykonos Blue. It just feels like taking a dip in the Aegean Sea. I also adore the Biba Rug in the blue-green colorway—reminds me of the disco divas of yore.
R: What’s one thing about this collection that will pleasantly surprise people?
JA: The colors! I think a lot of people are afraid to have patterned or colorful rugs but I’m here to tell you that you need one. You can thank me later.
