The mudroom is likely the last place in your home you’re looking at when it comes to decorating, but we’re here to change your mind. While the name itself represents the messy and chaotic nature of this space, the mudroom is also one of the main entrances to your home and presents the perfect opportunity to make a great first impression.
The key to creating a good mudroom is functionality paired with style. And nothing embodies this notion like a washable mudroom rug. After all, the best mudroom rug is one you’re able to muck up without stress and then toss it in the washing machine, no questions asked.
While the rug is the key to any good mudroom, there are other decorative elements you can easily incorporate to create a beautiful (and functional) space. Whether your style leans toward boho, farmhouse, or traditional, we’ve got mudroom decor ideas to inspire your next room makeover.
1. Wicker Cool
The combination of blue walls and neutral furniture brings a sense of calm to a space that can oftentimes feel hectic. Meanwhile, the wicker wall hangings add a design element that’s truly beautiful. Pulling it all together is the 5×7 bohemian rug. And thanks to its washability, you can enjoy the look of a light-colored rug in even the messiest of rooms. The rug’s neutral base with the dark geometric design complements the other decor perfectly. For a comfy finish, add some throw pillows to your seating area for a truly welcoming mudroom.
2. Farmhouse Bright
There’s no denying functionality is the main purpose of this mudroom. However, thanks to the farmhouse mudroom decor, it also emanates a sense of style that’s guaranteed to make you smile — no matter how messy it may get! For a little extra pizzazz, try layering a playful washable doormat over a coordinating patterned rug, like the 3×5 black and white rug seen here, for added personality.
3. A Minimalist’s Nook
Looking for decorating ideas for a small mudroom? Though it’s clear that elegant simplicity is valued above all else in the space seen here, the generous amount of storage, including the hooks and shelving, makes this nook a useful little mudroom. Plus, the washable 2×3 traditional rug proves the space is actually meant to be lived in, as well as admired.
4. Large and Lavish
On the other end of the spectrum, we have this much larger mudroom, which has room for the addition of a sink and a few more decorative items. We especially love the contrast of the dark cabinets against the white walls. To lean into this modern farmhouse aesthetic, a rug like the distressed runner here delivers a vintage appeal in modern hues. All you need are a few bits of greenery and some cute signs placed around the room to complete your lovely large mudroom.
5. No-Fuss, But Seriously Fantastic
There may not be many frills in this little mudroom, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t embody its own style identity. The warm-toned natural elements, like the bench, baskets, and picture frame, keep the gray wall panels from looking washed out, while the 5×7 traditional rug adds pattern and elegance. And at the end of the day, the space is able to serve its original purpose with hooks for hats and clothes and a bench to sit on when removing shoes.
6. Eclectic and Homey
Clearly ready to be lived-in, this mudroom features all kinds of playful elements that are as useful as they are pretty. Between the mix-and-match pillows on the wooden bench, the striped hooks on the wall, and the 6×9 red rug, the space is seamlessly mismatched and leans into the laid-back boho aesthetic. To finish the look, add in some greenery, real or faux, which will give an extra pop of color and style.

Hi, I had left an email a few days ago inquiring as to if you have those individual step rugs or runners for stairs?
I have a curve stairway so that’s why I’m looking for the individual otherwise I’d have to cut the runner into triangles around the curve.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Linda.
Thank you for your interest, Linda! We are happy to help.
Our rugs are designed to be used on flat, hard-surface floors and are not intended for use on stairs. At time time, we do not have any rugs/designs compatible with stairs.
Additionally, we do not recommend cutting your Ruggable rugs because the outside of the rug has a thread finish and it may fray/unravel when cut. If you insist on making alterations, we recommend taking it to an upholsterer to ensure you have the professional finish that you may want.
Please note, once your Ruggable has been altered in any way, it cannot be returned/refunded.
Hello,
Where is the bag with the writing and flowers in it from? It is sitting on the bench.
Thank you, Christina
Unfortunately, we don’t have information on the other décor or furniture shown! Many of our photos and videos are shared with us from our customers.
Would be nice if Ruggable offered more sizes/shapes . Some square options would be nice. 7×7 , 8×8 etc
We appreciate the feedback, Jane! We will pass along these suggestions to our team.✍️😊
I have luxury vinyl plank flooring. Instructions said not to use anything with a rubber backing. I am concerned that may be what is in your pads. If so I will only be able to use them on my tile floors. Thanks!
Hi, Susan! Our rug pad consists of rubber and recycled polyester and thermoplastic rubber (a latex-free synthetic material most commonly used in yoga mats). Our rug pads are also 100% latex-free, in case you were wondering!
The synthetic, latex-free, thermoplastic rubber in our Rug Pads won’t stain or leave residue on hard surface floors or vinyl. However, we recommend double-checking with the flooring manufacturer to ensure your flooring is compatible with this material or if you have any concerns!
Hi there, Carole! In regards to the sliding, we recommend first trying to double check and ensure proper assembly as that can often lead to issues with the grip if not done correctly. Please feel free to use the following link for our assembly instructions, if needed:

If the issue persists please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team at support@ruggable.com! Our team would be happy to see what other remedies they can offer as well as help with any other questions you may have.
As for your question, both of our Rug Pads are designed to grip hard floor surface flooring, including wood and tile, although there are some types of floor that may not be compatible with our design. Our team is happy to further look into the matter, as mentioned above, and confirm what is the best course of action to help address this matter!
Can the rug pad be placed over carpet without damage to the carpet underneath? If a rug pad cannot be used, what is your suggestion for holding the ruggable in place?
Hi, Dorothy! Those are all great questions.😊
Our Ruggable Rug System has the most effective grip on hard surfaces. While many customers successfully use Ruggable Rug Systems on carpeted floors, carpeting reduces the effectiveness of its grip.
Please note that we do not recommend using our rugs over carpeted areas, however, customers who have placed their Rug System on carpeted floors have seen the best results when the rug is anchored with a sofa or heavy table and away from heavy traffic areas.
Lastly, please know that We do not recommend using only the Rug Cover on top of carpeted floors. The Cover and Pad should always be used together.
