Keep scrolling to check out the five rug trends for 2022 and how to shop them.
1. Antique Aesthetic
“There are a couple of rugs that will be popular in the coming year, but vintage rugs remain number one,” Andi Morse, founder and principal designer of Morse Design, tells us. “Their beautiful look adds instant character and dimension to a space.”
But don’t worry! You don’t have to spend time digging through thrift stores and flea markets to find an actual vintage rug to indulge in this trend. There are plenty of vintage-looking styles you can find from Ruggable. Not only are they more affordable than other vintage finds, they’re also machine washable, making them less fussy, as well. Look for classic rug patterns, like Persian-inspired prints with distressed details, to really lean into the antique feel.
2. Muted Neutrals
“More traditional and colorful styles of rugs were huge with the modern farmhouse trend for the past two years,” New Jersey-based interior designer Athena Rutigliano says. “Although it’s still prevalent, I think that it’ll phase out for this upcoming year. You’ll still see lots of neutrals and muted patterned rugs, since they are a constant in creating more of a transitional, timeless feel.”
While neutral rugs might not seem like anything exciting, they’re incredibly versatile, elegant, and classic. Plus, if done right, a neutral rug can be a knockout with its simple charm. With a variety of styles and color palettes available, it’s easy to go beyond beige and opt for a rich shade in a pattern that suits the rest of your decor.
3. Animal Hides and Patterns
If you want to stick to the neutral colors but are looking for something more bold and statement-making, Morse thinks animal hides and animal-pattern rugs will continue to dominate the market in 2022. “I’m especially seeing more animal hides that form intricate patterns because they are soft and luxurious while still maintaining a neutral palette,” she explains.
You might be surprised how seamlessly animal print rugs can blend into a space while delivering the right bit of intrigue and personality.
4. Geometric Patterns
If animal-print doesn’t quite fit with your style and design, Rutigliano expects to see a lot of varying geometric patterns on rugs in those neutral, tonal hues. “Diamond, herringbone, and other small prints and textures are frontrunners and are not going anywhere, anytime soon,” she says. “Classic and streamlined patterns and colors will continue to be more popular.”
This type of geometric rug helps deliver that slight bit of dimension that monotone rugs cannot. With that being said, the sleek, linear designs are minimal enough that they won’t distract from other standout pieces in your space.
5. Flat-Woven Rugs
When it comes to texture and material, Rutigliano says it’s all about the flat weave picks. “People are moving away from natural fibers, such as Sisal and Hemp. Other blends of materials can achieve the same look and are much easier to clean,” Rutigliano explains. “Flat weave rugs are big and clients are looking for comfort and function when selecting rugs for all spaces of the house.”
A flat weave rug, like our Re-Jute Rugs and Outdoor Rugs, are great for both indoor and outdoor spaces thanks to their durability and weather-resistance. If you’re looking for a longtime investment, flat weave rugs like these can endure a lot and are perfect for adding style to high-traffic areas.
