If you’ve been to our Instagram page, you’ve probably seen Tommy Lei’s space. Not only have we featured multiple rooms of his house in our Instagram feed, but his design style is also so distinct and out-of-this-world gorgeous that it would be nearly impossible not to do a double-take.
Recently, Tommy took over our Instagram Stories, and graciously welcomed us to his home in Los Angeles, California. If you missed that, lucky for you, we’re here to give you a little tour of his home, his design inspirations, and of course, the rugs that perfectly captured his unique sense of style.
Name: Tommy Lei
Profession: Interior stylist, photographer, and the content creator behind @MyBelonging
Style Philosophy: “I believe no matter what interior style you gravitate towards, the most important thing is that a home should feel like home. It should be a place of warmth, a personal sanctuary you look forward to coming home to.
My design sensibilities reinforce those visual ideals: it’s mid-century modern at the core but with plenty of Scandinavian influences peppered in with my Chinese heritage. I love incorporating modern, iconic pieces while making them less stuffy and more accessible in everyday arrangements.
I want my space to feel like a living sanctuary, a place where you can live, breathe, and play in. Whether you’re a minimalist, traditionalist, maximalist, super eclectic, or bohemian, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, you want to come to a space where you can relax and feel at peace with everything else going on in your life.”
The Gradasi Grey Rug in the Living Room
“I am in love with the geometric stripes of the Gradasi Grey Rug. It’s one of the primary reasons I chose it. It coexists so well with our bold, black-and-white wallpaper, along with a modern sofa and glass Noguchi coffee table. It is the perfect complement. I love how the stripes somehow ground the space, without overpowering any of the other existing elements! The result is a mix of a minimalistic vibe with vibrancy and warmth.”
The Cosmic Marble Grey Rug in the Office
“This was my first-ever Ruggable purchase! And it’s been with me for the past two years—that’s how much I treasure it. I’ve always entertained the idea of having marble floors but didn’t like how cold it would look in a cottage-size home.
The Cosmic Marble Grey Rug was my solution for recreating the marble aesthetic without sacrificing function and warmth to a space. The office is where I do a lot of creative work. This rug adds the right amount of elegance and statement to the room.”
The Plano Turquoise Rug in the Tea Room
“I knew I wanted my tea room to be the epitome of cozy, fun, and function. That’s why the Plano Turquoise Rug appealed to me. It complemented my lush, terracotta-peach wallpaper seamlessly, and helped me arrange the furniture! (See how the circles correspond so well to the cushions?) I love that it can be so neutral and visually interesting at the same time.”
The Kalina Blue Rug in the Guest Office
“The Kalina Blue Rug was a challenge for me. For someone who so naturally gravitates toward a minimalist and neutral color palette, the Kalina spoke to me on a couple of levels: 1) It broke through the monotony and my comfort zone as an interior designer and stylist, and 2) It paired so well with two existing art pieces I own from Brooklyn-based artist, Andy Blank! I couldn’t resist making my guest office into a flower power room. The Kalina provided the perfect finishing touch.”
